A novel targeted anticancer therapy system based on carbon nanocapsules

Researchers from the Materials Science Institute of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) in collaboration with the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMC-CNRS) and King’s College London (KCL) have developed a novel nanocarrier anti-cancer platform for the targeted delivery of radioactivity.

Bioglass for implants and bone grafts

The CSIC, the University of Malaga and the CIBER laboratory have obtained bio-glass for medical uses in bone regeneration and tissue engineering. These materials, called Nitri-bioglasses, can be used as temporary scaffolds in bone implants or reconstructive surgery. They biodegrade quickly and enhance the adhesion and growth of new cells.

Award for the bioreactor that simulates the liver

The project "Liver on a chip", participated by the Biomedical Applications Group of the IMB-CNM (CSIC), won the second prize of the second Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) Health Innovation Contest in the Biomedical Research Innovation category.

Four CSIC scientists, awarded in the Llavor program for the creation of technology start-up companies

It is the first edition of the Llavor program, which is aimed at promoting the creation of new technological companies. Four CSIC scientists lead four of the 24 awarded projects.

Hearten, an app to help in the treatment of heart failure

Hearten is a project funded by the European Commission aimed at developing devices and apps for tablets and mobile phones, in order to help heart failure patients and sanitarian professionals to improve adherence to therapy.

Organ on a chip for biomedical experimentation

Scientists at the CSIC and at CIBER have developed a device which combines microelectronics and microfluidics to reproduce cell barrier conditions and to monitor them. It has applications on medical essays, to test drugs designed to penetrate cell barriers, such as antitumoral drugs for brain tumors or treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.

Molecule successful in treating Alzheimer's disease in mice

Researchers at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of Barcelona (UB) have successfully tested the ASS234 molecule in transgenic mice models of Alzheimer's diseases.

Award for the business project OnaSensLife

An incipient business project of scientists at the l’Institut de Microelectrònica de Barcelona has won the third prize in the Programa de Generació d’Idees competition. It is based on a device for the rapid and easy detection of Legionella.

New nanodrug improves the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers

A nanomedicine developed and patented by the research group Nanomol at the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Barcelona (CSIC), and by the Centro de Ingeniería Genética y Biotecnología in Cuba, will be commercialized by the company Heber Biotec. The agreement will allow the development and commercialization of a nanoformulated protein for the improved treatment of diabetic foot ulcers.
