The first nano drug for selectively fighting metastatic cells

Scientists from the IQAC-CSIC have participated in the development and essay of a molecule for fighting colon cancer metastasis. It is the first drug worldwide that blocks metastasis dissemination, which is the main cause of mortality of oncological patients. Also, the study demonstrates that the drug is less toxic and therefore reduces the adverse effects derived from conventional treatments.

Obtained a synthetic single molecule which inhibits the anticoagulant heparin

Scientists at the IQAC-CSIC have obtained a synthetic single molecule which inhibits heparin, the most used anticoagulant drug nowadays. The development has been possible by dynamic combinatorial chemistry. Dynamic chemistry makes possible quickly discovering active molecules and drugs.

Scientists study the role of a protein in the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Scientists at the Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques (CSIC-IDIBAPS) and at the Institut de Química Avançada de Catalunya, of the CSIC, have been awarded one of the 6 grants of the BBVA Foundation for biomedical research. The scientists will study the implication of a protein in Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, which is involved in obesity related diseases.

A fluorescent probe to monitor mitochondria in living cells

A scientific team has developed a fluorescent probe for monitoring the function and activity of a specific transporter in mitochondria of living cells. It is the first probe that enters the mithocondria through a specific transporter (Carnitine-acylcarnitine translocase) and it could be used for the diagnosis of rare metabolic diseases.

Improving ‘in vitro’ cell cultures for regenerative medicine

Biomaterials obtained through cell cultures are an excellent therapeutic strategy for the treatment of damaged tissues and organs. However, their obtention still presents handicaps. CSIC scientists have developed a method that boosts the collagen synthesis and can regulate the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells.

Low cost technology for the early diagnosis of cystinuria

Scientists at the Instituto de Química Avanzada de Catalunya of the CSIC have developed a technology for the precise and early diagnosis of cystinuria disease, through urine testing. It is based on molecular networks to produce a measurable signal when some substances are linked to a specific molecule.

New materials for brain repair and neuronal regeneration

MAGBBRIS, a recently approved European project, which counts on the ICMAB-CSIC participation, will develop magnetic nano-biomaterials for brain repair and to obtaining images after a stroke. Another project led by the ICMAB-CSIC will develop new electroactive materials for neuronal regeneration.

A spin-off company to design and develop preclinical assays of liver diseases

Barcelona Liver Bioservices (BLB) is a spin-off of the CSIC and IDIBAPS created to offer services of designing and developing pre-clinical assays of liver diseases and liver toxicity of compounds.

A new strategy deactivates antibiotic resistance bacteria

A new strategy to fight bacteria antibiotic resistance has been developed. It targets specifically the microdomains of the bacterial membrane where proteins are assembled to form protein complexes.
