Environment-friendly cement with recycled ceramics

A group of scientists at the Instituto de Ciencias de la Construcción Eduardo Torroja within the CSIC has developed a methodology to obtain new types of cement which include ceramic material waste. This process could be an interesting alternative to reuse disposal which is not recycled.

Fast-responsive photochromic coating

Scientists at the CSIC, at the Institut Català de Nanociencia i Nanotecnologia (ICN-CSIC) and at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, have developed a photochromic coating based on micro and nanocapsules, whose optical properties change very quickly depending on the external light.

Nanoquim: advanced materials at nanometric scale

The Nanoquim Platform laboratory, at the CSIC’s Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona, is specialized in nanostructured materials preparation. Here it is possible to obtain nanoparticles, nanowires, nanocoatings or molecular assemblies by different chemical processes.

Next June 27th , the Nanoquim Workshop will take place at the Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona. It is a good opportunity to know the services offered by this Clean Room focused on material nanostructuration.

Method transforms old tyres into energy

A research group of CSIC, in collaboration with the company ENRECO 2000, has developed a process to transform waste tyres into fuel oil, carbon black and gasses capable of generating electricity. The methodology obtains as much energy from the tyre as it is possible with the minimum emission of polluting gasses. Partners interested in licensing the patent are being sought.

Biomimetic polyester

The CSIC and the University of Málaga have patented a new procedure for the synthesis of polyaleurate polyester, a mimetic polymer of plant cutin, and its use as a biodegradable packaging material for food or active ingredients. It consists of a non-toxic plastic polymer which can be obtained from raw materials coming from vegetable wastes.

Latest trends in batteries

The International Battery Association meeting will take place in Barcelona next March, from the 10th to the 15th. It will congregate scientists working on batteries as well as companies and students from over the world.

Trapping phosphogypsum radiation

A method for immobilizing phosphogypsum radiation has been developed. Phosphoghypsum is a radioactive waste generated during the fabrication of phosphoric acid. The new method combines phosphogypsum with a sulfuric polymer, obtaining as a result a new polymeric cement with radiation levels below the legal limits, that could be safely applied for construction.

Eurotapes: boosting the European superconductivity industry

The Eurotapes Project is the biggest effort ever launched by the European Commission for the development of superconductor materials and their applications. 20 partners from 9 countries are involved in this consortium, which is led by the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Barcelona (ICMAB).
