Genetic improvement of stone fruit trees for obtaining new varieties

The Group of Genetic Improvement of Fruit Trees at the Centro de Edafología y Biología Aplicada del Segura of the CSIC develops programs to improve the species of the genus Prunus to increase productivity, improve the adaptation to climatic conditions and the resistance to the Sharka virus, among others.

A device for predicting oxidation and shelf-life of oil and foods with lipids

The CSIC has developed a portable device to assay oxidation of oil and other foods with lipids. It enables producers to simulate the process of food oxidation in virtually real conditions, therefore emulating transport and storage environment. Now, scientists are seeking for agro-food companies interested in the development.

Alert system to improve the production of farmed fish

Researches from the Instituto de Acuicultura Torre de la Sal (IATS-CSIC), the Instituto de Microelectrónica de Barcelona (IMB-CNM-CSIC) and the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria have developed an intelligent system “AE-FishBIT” for monitoring the behaviour of breeding fishes. The device makes it possible to know the degree of well-being of farmed fish to improve the production.

Plants as antifungal factories

CSIC scientists at the CRAG, the IBMCP and the IATA centres, have demonstrated that plants can be used as antifungal factories, enabling a sustainable, safe and non expensive production of these antifungal proteins. The results of the research published in the Plant Biotechnology Journal could impact the pharmaceutical and agri-food industries.

Method for the extraction of biocomponents from spirulina

CSIC scientists have developed a method for the extraction of biocomponents from spirulina. These components are interesting because their anti-hypertensive, anti-hyperlipidemic and antioxidant benefits. The method and the extract obtained have application in the food, cosmetic or pharmaceutical industry.

Method for detecting allergens from lupin seeds with a high specificity

Scientists at the CSIC have developed a procedure to detect allergens from lupin seeds in processed and non-processed food, including cross-contamination. It has a high specificity, as it detects traces of different isoforms of the main lupin allergenic proteins.

Seafood Tomorrow, a European project for improving seafood sector

SEAFOOD Tomorrow is a new European Union Horizon 2020-funded project aimed at developing sustainable solutions to improve the safety and dietary properties of seafood. A scientific team of the CSIC is involved in the project.

Biopolymer to heal plant wounds

The ICMAB-CSIC and the Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics have developed an effective method for plant tissue regeneration that involves the use of a bacterial cellulose-based biopolymer. It enhances the formation of new cell layers which boosts the healing processes.

PerformFISH, a project aimed at developing a Mediterranean sustanaible aquaculture

The Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) is part of PerformFISH, a new H2020 European project focus on developing consumer driven aquaculture production by integrating innovative approaches that can help ensure European sea bream and sea bass aquaculture businesses are sustainable and competitive.
