The antioxidant enzyme SOD-3 (superoxide dismutase-3), which is produced in the human cell membrane, can help the immune system to eliminate tumour cells, as scientists found out. The discovery suggests new strategies to fight cancer.

Picture: CSIC.Scientists at the Spanish National Center of Biotechnology have discovered that the antioxidant enzyme SOD-3 (superoxide dismutase-3), which is produced in the human cell membrane, can help the immune system to eliminate tumour cells.

The SOD-3 has been known until now by his protective role against oxidative stress and inflammation. The team has found out that when SOD-3 is over expressed it can improve lymphocytes infiltration therefore increases its capacity to kill cancer cells. This research, still in an early stage, suggests new strategies to fight cancer.
