Disease Activity index and protective effects after applying the derivatives of resveratrol.
Resveratrol, a natural antioxidant that can be found within grapes and wine, has anti-inflammatory properties. Unfortunately, its rapid metabolism diminishes its effectiveness in the colon.
Scientists from the CSIC have designed a group of anti-inflammatory compounds, derivates of resveratrol, that have been patented. An experiment to test the new molecules against ulcerative colitis has shown that they are effective in very small quantities. Scientists have found that the new compounds prevent the rapid metabolism of resveratrol and reduce mucosal barrier imbalance, thus they prevent diarrhea. This work is a first step towards a specific treatment for inflammatory bowel disease for which there is not yet a definitive cure.
