Artificial Intelligence algorithms for solidarity

Scientists at the CSIC’s Instituto de Investigación en Inteligencia Artificial have developed an app, uHelp, to facilitate the creation and strengthening of solidarity communities.

An image of the video explaining the project. The app, which is now a prototype, is based on artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to create social networks of collaborative economy: specifically, to create a network to help with everyday tasks, which are usually urgent and delicate, such as caring a child or an elder, buying a drug or helping a disable person to do the shopping.

The algorithms improve the way connections between members are established, in order to make the request to arrive the most suitable members depending on their experience, available time, proximity and other factors.

The algorithms take into account the requirements of the user (in reference to the level of confidence and friendship) and make an intelligent search in the whole social network, in order to find and recommend the best volunteers for the task. The algorithms evaluate also the previous experiences of other users and volunteers.

This prototype was designed in cooperation with a group of single mums of a Catalan association of single-parent families. Now, the scientists are improving and adapting the app for vulnerable groups such as immigrants and refugees.
