New refrigerating machine with an efficiency comparable to the electric ones

Researchers at the CSIC have developed a refrigerating machine suitable for bromide lithium-water absorption, air-air, direct expansion and Split, with a high energy efficiency. It is a sustainable and efficient alternative designed for home cooling. It is condensed by air, has less environmental impact, is easy to build and it does not generate contamination by Legionella.

The CSIC prototype is formed by an external and an internal unit, which solve the simple-effect and the double-effect absorption problems. The exterior unit contains the generator, the air condenser and the absorber. The interior unit has a direct expansion evaporator, with a refrigeration Volume/Power ratio of 0,08 m3/kW.

The machine has successfully worked with an outside temperature between 32 and 42º C, as it avoids the crystallization. The daily energy efficiency of the simple-effect actioned by solar-power was around 0,6. From the environment, energy and economic points of view, this new system is competitive compared to the current mechanical compression machines.

“It does not generate contamination by Legionella, it does not destroy ozone and the refrigerant does not generate a direct greenhouse effect,” says Marcelo Izquierdo, a researcher at the Eduardo Torroja Institute of Construction Sciences in Madrid.

The prototype is a sustainable and efficient alternative compared to current models. Intended for home cooling, it works at powers between 3 kW and 15 kW.
