The new technology can transform vegetal biomass into elecricity and bio-oilThe CSIC’s Instituto de Carboquímica has signed a contract with the Spanish company UxúeBioenergia y Renovables to design and set up a biomass plant for the simultaneous production of bio-oil and electricity.

The new plant can annually process 1,728 tones of dried vegetal biomass, or 200 kilograms per hour, from which near 900 tones of bio-oil can be obtained, what means that approximately half of the dried biomass weight is converted into bio-oil.

For the future, when this technology will be totally developed, the company is planning to set up bigger biomass plants: one in Cordoba, to the south of Spain, with capacity to annually process 30,000 biomass tones, and another in Ukraine, with capacity for 150,000 biomass tones and 20-25 MWe power.
