Bioreactor for cell cultures reproduces in vivo-like conditions

A new bioreactor for cell cultures has been developed and patented. It enables the reproduction of in vivo cellular behaviors. Also permits simultaneous two, three or more cell cultures. Only one part of the reactor is disposable, which decreases the lab material expenses.

Left, prototype of the bioreactor, open. The cell cultures are placed in the inner membranes (red arrow) where fluid pipelines arrive. Right, image of a static cell culture. Scientists at the Instituto de Microelectrónica de Barcelona (IMB-CNM) of the CSIC, together with the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), the Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red (CIBER) and the Hospital Clínico de Barcelona, have developed an easy-handling bioreactor for dynamical cell cultures.

Its set-up based on in/out perfusion fluid pipelines allows the cells to be biomechanically stimulated. Therefore, it is possible to apply on the cell cultures, in a controlled way, several fluids and to reproduce certain experimental conditions.  The device enables to reproduce in vivo cellular behaviors and it is suitable for the study of the physiopathology- basis of diseases and for the development and validation of therapies.

Easy-to-use, this bioreactor obtains a maximal profit of the cultured cells, as they can be seeded in static mode following standard protocols. Also allows individualized post experimental analysis for each cell type cultured in the bioreactor.

The device permits two, three or more cell cultures. Moreover, only one part of the reactor is disposable which decreases material cost for its use in laboratories. It is modular, demountable and gives easy access to the culture chambers which facilitate its handling and the individualized post analysis of the different cell types.
