Modified cells from patient to treat ischemia

A group of researchers from the CSIC has developed a new cell therapy that could treat ischemia and renal failure.

It is based on the application of a particular type of cells, macrophages, obtained from the patient and modified to over-express NGAL, a protein that prevents inflammation and stimulates cell regeneration. This could avoid the damages due to isquemia that can lead to death cell and organ failure. The development of this therapy, which has already been patented, is now in preclinical stage.
