The antioxidant enzyme SOD-3 (superoxide dismutase-3), which is produced in the human cell membrane, can help the immune system to eliminate tumour cells, as scientists found out. The discovery suggests new strategies to fight cancer.
Scientists at the Spanish National Center of Biotechnology have discovered that the antioxidant enzyme SOD-3 (superoxide dismutase-3), which is produced in the human cell membrane, can help the immune system to eliminate tumour cells.
The SOD-3 has been known until now by his protective role against oxidative stress and inflammation. The team has found out that when SOD-3 is over expressed it can improve lymphocytes infiltration therefore increases its capacity to kill cancer cells. This research, still in an early stage, suggests new strategies to fight cancer.
